Baby we were born to run

We did it! Team Hot Buns finished the Freihofer’s Run for Women today! Emily did a fantastic job designing the team shirt, and we received multiple compliments. At one point, a random woman came up to us and said, “Ooooh, it’s the Hot Buns girls! We LOVE your shirts!!!!” As usual, Emily got her crafty on, and the results were awesome.

I have to say the event was overall a success…just a few minor issues. Bib pick up was fairly well organized (but then again, anything was more organized than the Turkey Trot). On Friday, Michele and I stopped by the Empire State Plaza to pick up the race t-shirt and check out some of the vendors. Nothing too exciting, but it was definitely worth getting the packet early to avoid the morning race rush. After a pre-race pasta fest with my parents and an early bedtime, we were up and out the door for Albany by 8 am. Michele, Kelly, and I arrived a little early and during our stretch time got our picture taken by the Times Union (local Albany newspaper) photographer. We actually made it onto their online slide show!

We hooked up with Emily and then it was off to the start line. The gun went off at 10:15, but we didn’t actually cross the start line until 10:17. The race course began with a long slow hill on Madison ave, meandered throughout Washington park and then ended with a downhill stretch back by the Museum. It felt ridiculously hot and the breeze that was bothering us so much before the race decided to stop completely. I actually stopped at all of the water stops because I was feeling the heat so much. Kelly and I met up towards the end and ran the home-stretch together. Post-race festivities also went well. Although I opted not to get hosed off by the firetruck that was squirting the crowd (as enticing as that sounded) I did manage to consume a small pond’s worth of water. And to top it all of, they gave out a free box of Freihofer chocolate chip cookies…mmmm.

FINISHED!

So overall, it was a great 5k experience…until I got home and checked the results. Because of the increased cost, the people in charge of the race decided not to do net times and only report gun times. Essentially this means that the time we were waiting to cross the start line was tacked onto our overall time. No race I have done before has ever did this. It was super disappointing to see those two minutes I shaved off my turkey trot time disappear. Oh well. I still enjoyed the overall race experience and now I can look forward to the Boilermaker!
